Deer Control for Your Property

Deer control management can be challenging but there are some solutions to keep them from eating your plants and shrubs.

Install Deer Fencing which is an effective way to keep deer off of your property. Depending on your property’s it may be expensive. We recommend that you have a professional landscape company install the fencing.  Deer fence rules vary from town to town, and from village to village.

WHICH PLANTS DO DEER LIKE?

Deer love narrow-leafed evergreens, especially arborvitae and fir. They prefer hostas, daylilies, and English ivy, according to researchers from the University of Rhode Island, who have studied white-tailed deer damage to nurseries in the Northeast. They report that the heaviest browsing occurs from October through February, when food is naturally scarce. Keep in mind that really no plants are deer proof.

WHICH PLANTS DO DEER DISLIKE?

Deer naturally tend to stay away from poisonous plants such as daffodils, foxgloves, and poppies.

Deer also dislike fragrant plants with strong scents. Herbs such as sages, ornamental salvias, and lavender, as well as flowers like peonies and bearded irises, are just “stinky” to deer.

Not surprisingly, deer don’t like prickly plants. Plants such as lamb’s ear are not on their preferred menu.

Another option for deer control is liquid deer repellent which coats plants and makes them unpalatable to deer.  Apply repellent to arborvitae and other evergreens all year round and especially in winter when food is scarce.

If you have a specimen that is getting eaten by deer and you want to keep it, we recommend under planting it with another plant that is deer resistant. You will want to give a buffer zone of about five inches, when under planting. The more difficult you make it for the deer to gain access to the sensitive plant, the better.
